Some 35 miles east of Albuquerque along I-40, (or better yet, the adjacent old Route 66) lies the town of Moriarty, New Mexico. The land, which has sloped away from the eastern base of the Sandia Mountains, tends to be flat plains, with a mixture of developments and rural areas. Homes are available on anything from a city-size lot to large acreage for farming or horse properties. It is a common sight to see people riding horseback along the roadways, and moderate prices for homes and land keep the area constantly growing, attracting many former Albuquerqueans to forsake the city for a more rural lifestyle.
The founding of Moriarty dates back to 1887, when a young Iowa man, Michael Moriarty, left home because of his poor health, heading for California. Along the way, he was convinced to stay in New Mexico by some railroad men. During his travels in the state, he met the son of Governor Edmond Ross, who was searching for homestead land. They arrived in the area that is now Moriarty on March 7, 1887. The area seemed to have a beneficial effect on Mr. Moriarty's health, so he decided to call it home, returning to Iowa only to sell his belongings, pack up and move his family out west.
The city of Albuquerque is within a 45 minute drive, yet most residents do their ordinary shopping right in Moriarty. The main street of Moriarty has numerous stores, restarants, and small businesses. Moriarty also has it's own highly ranked school system that is considered one of the most desireable in the area.
